Theatre: Beyond The Barricade

Last night I went to the theatre with my Mum, Auntie and Cousin. I absolutely love the Theatre and am quite lucky where I live, as Milton Keynes Theatre tends to get a selection of really good shows which sometimes come in straight from the West End. Musicals are totally my thing, you can get lost in a musical and they definitely become my escape for a few hours. Singing in the Rain is my absolute favourite, I could sit and watch that countless times and never get bored, although I only have to hear the tune and I am balling my eyes out. Tears of happy memories though, I get taken back to watching it with my Gramps singing or whistling along when I was little.

We went to see a show called Beyond The Barricade. I had never heard of it before, but everyone else fancied going so I thought that I would tag along. The whole show is made up of songs from some of the most popular theatre productions. Last night included songs from Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, The Lion King and of course Les Miserables to name a few.

I am a bit fussy when it comes to singing of show songs, I can’t hold a note myself but I was brought up listening to Michael Ball so I have a very high standard. I did say before that my music taste was extremely varied lol! Each one of the cast had the most beautiful voices, which you could expect as they have all been part of Les Mis themselves! They took it in turn singing songs and sung together on a few also. On stage there was 4 microphones and a small band, the cast members moved forward and back when it was their turn to sing the songs. Personally, I would have liked a bit more going on, on stage but thats just me being picky.
Some of the songs in the show didn’t appeal to me, but the others were perfect so it more than balanced out. I didn’t expect for them to sing any songs from The Lion King, this is my favourite Disney film and I really needed to hold back the emotion during The Circle of Life. Phantom of the Opera was beautiful too, All I Ask Of You is one of my favourite songs and they really sung it beautifully.
I didn’t really know what to expect with this show, but it pleasantly surprised me. I came away wishing I could sing, which always happens when I take a trip to the theatre.
